Stores can certainly benefit from having music played all throughout the time that they’re open with customers browsing racks upon racks of products. Getting customers inside a store can certainly be done by luring them in with hip beats or cool tunes. However, not all types of music would be ideal for all stores. A store has to be careful in choosing the music they place as it will be connected to their identity as a business. Playing overhead music should never be done randomly, but rather done in a planned and specific manner to influence the mood and behavior of a customer. Playing music that’s fast paced will make customers hurry and will make them choose quickly and leave quickly as well. Music that’s slow and soothing on the other hand can make customers linger while making their selections and might influence them to get more items from the shelves in front of them.

Having music inside the store should never be dictated by the wants of employees but rather targeted to improve customer moods, or brand the business. In using music to help enhance a brand, it’s important that the type of music chosen should be attractive to the target customers. On hold music should also be carefully chosen to make it unique to the business but at the same time achieve its purpose of keeping customers patient. This helps businesses maintain their identity while at the same time soothing customers who might become impatient while waiting in line for service.
