A sitemap is an integral part of your SEO. When submitted to search engines, a sitemap will provide search engines easy access to all of your content.
Certain search engines rely on sitemaps more than others, but Google certainly pays attention to sitemaps, therefore it is standard for me to implement one.
WordPress based sites will have an automatic sitemap.xml generator implemented, which will automatically regenerate and re-submit sitemaps whenever changes are made to your website/blog.
